Case Study – Audi TT Union Jack Wrap
Client – Julian Bovis
Start Date – 1st August 2004

Brief
Julian Bovis, who had found our details on the Internet, contacted us to discuss the transformation of his beloved Audi TT. His first one had been stolen, and so to deter would be thieves from stealing his replacement, he decided to make it stand out from the crowd. With the use of a model version of the car, plus some pots of paint, he put his design together and emailed Raccoon a photograph. Julian wanted us to wrap his Audi in a two-colour Union Jack design, using the metallic silver bodywork of the car in place of the usual white. He also wanted the design to follow the contours of the car, bringing out its classic lines.

Specification
Materials
During our initial survey of the vehicle, we tested various colour combinations, finally deciding on a midnight blue and cherry red. These two shades, although darker than a normal Union Jack, worked beautifully with the metallic silver paintwork.

Production In preparation for the application of the design, we computer cut the material into there various elements. With the base design ready, this helped speed up application and ensure the design was faithfully reproduced.

Installation Having already carried out a similar project, our two highly skilled fitters had full confidence in the project and with the client, Julian, on hand throughout the day it helped them greatly. First, the George Cross was applied to the vehicle, and then the remaining red sections. Finally, the blue elements were applied and trimmed to shape. It sounds easy, but took our fitters a very hard day’s work to complete!

Challenges With it impossible to pre-plan all aspects of the design before the application started, it was essential that time was taken during each step of the project. The first decision to be made was on the widths of the various elements that made up the design. The main red cross (the St Georges) was made the same width as the number plate on the car, with the red lines sitting just wide of the rear exhaust pipes. Another difficult part of the project was ensuring that the design was symmetrical, not 100% true to the design of the Union Jack but one that was essential to guarantee a design masterpiece!

Client Response Julian was over the moon about the finished wrap, and couldn’t wait to drive the car away. After a weekend of driving around London, his response was emphatic, “The TT has gone down incredibly well! Everyone loves the car, and it seems to get endless smiles and waves on the street - plus the added bonus of being let out at junctions - an unheard of phenomenon in London!”
