Raccoon collaborates on bespoke pop-up shop fit-out for retailer L.L.Bean

Raccoon was approached by experiential agency Hyphen to collaborate on a solution for American retailer L.L. Bean. The challenge was to deliver a mobile, bespoke shop fit-out that would enable the brand to take their offering outdoors as part of a 3-year tour.

Building onto existing mobile units, the solution was required to offer lightweight components which needed to be modular and transported easily. So where did we start? Our creative team began by interpreting the concepts provided by the client and working these up into 3D design intent drawings. Once finalised, we were able to output these to CAD to provide technical plans for our production and manufacturing team. This process was essential in defining the modular elements for the build so we could visualise how everything will work together and be fit for purpose. This display solution consisted of shelving walls and hanging space for merchandise, built with a steel ‘urban’ scaffolding system. There were also low-level display elements such as tables and a lace bar for footwear that needed to be delivered, as well as a TV wall, pedestal units and POS counters. These free-standing elements were totally bespoke and handmade for this brief.

As part of the project, we considered the creative direction that this bespoke fit-out was looking to achieve. The elements needed to be sympathetic to the brand’s outdoor and organic look and feel, and so wood and metal were the key themes in bringing this to life. Our objective was to achieve a premium wood effect finish for the modular elements, at the right price point and weight.

Our recommendation was to specify a high-quality lightweight plywood called BANOVA, an FSC certified balsa timber. We have had stunning results with this material for structural components, furniture and display projects and knew it would be perfect. Raccoon’s extensive production facilities enabled us to digitally print a ‘reclaimed wood effect’ directly onto the timber to achieve the creative direction.

We were thrilled with the end result: an authentic, flexible and on-brand solution that will enable L.L.Bean to showcase their collection at events, country fairs and festivals. Achieved by combining off-the-shelf shopfitting components with bespoke elements, it is also another great example of our sustainably-led capabilities which we are very passionate about as a company.
