Stickers vs decals | What's the difference?

What are stickers and decals, and which is right for you?

Stickers and decals are both used for decorating, advertising and company branding. That’s why some people think of them as the same thing and use the terms interchangeably. But custom stickers and vinyl decals can be quite different, and it’s important to know what you’re buying to avoid confusion.

This guide looks at what sets decals and stickers apart, and why you might choose one over the other.

Contents

What are decals?

Vinyl decals come in three parts: a back lining, the application or ‘transfer’ tape, and the design itself. Decals tend to be more intricate than stickers, with individual parts like vinyl lettering. The lining and tape hold the design in place until it’s applied, and they also help to prevent damage.

Application is easy. Just remove the backing so the design stays on the transfer tape. Position the tape against a clean surface, then apply pressure evenly to avoid bubbles or wrinkles. Finally, gently pull the tape away to see your finished decal in place.

Vinyl decals are good for indoor and outdoor use, and they can be used to decorate office spaces, vehicle windows, drinkware and even video game controllers.

What are stickers?

Custom stickers come in just two parts: the design itself and the adhesive backing. They’re easier to apply than decals, but the results aren’t always as durable.

Many people use stickers to customise personal items, but they have commercial uses too. Big-name brands apply stickers to promote their latest products or limited-time sales, and they’re sometimes given away as ‘swag’ at events.

While vinyl decals are usually better than stickers for long-term use, not all stickers are of the same quality. Our custom vinyl stickers are easy to use, and the results are resistant to scratches, water and UV rays.

Should you go for custom stickers or decals?

Not sure whether to go with stickers or decals? The questions below can help you choose.

1. What size do you need?

Custom stickers are usually small and sold in packs. So, if you’re after something cheap that can be placed in goodie bags or displayed around a retail space quickly and easily, they’re a good bet. Decals, on the other hand, are much better for single, eye-catching displays. If you’re going big with your design, we recommend using custom wall films for the very best results.

2. Are you trying to get your brand recognised?

Because stickers are quick to peel and stick, it's just as easy to display them around your premises. In fact, putting them on products and freebies is a great way to get your brand name out there – and you probably wouldn’t do that using decals!

Want something that’s easy to reposition? Check out this static cling decal. It works without an adhesive, so there’s no residue and it can be repositioned time and again.

3. Are you making a graphic or mural?

Decals can form complex shapes and detailed works of art. These artworks can include vibrant imagery, serve as unique woodland scenes, or brighten up an otherwise dull conference room. The individual pieces of a decal mean you’re less limited in what you can achieve.

If you’re planning to create a mural, we recommend using graphics over paintwork. Find out why graphics win out every time in our painted murals vs printed graphics comparison.

4. Is it for a temporary project?

Vinyl decals are generally designed to be more durable than stickers. Often displayed on vehicles, many decals adhere well to curved surfaces and can last up to 7 years when applied correctly. Most store-bought stickers won’t last as long, but thanks to modern printing techniques, some vinyl stickers can last for years in good conditions.
